Honda Homes in on Electrified Vehicle Market
Moving forward with its Electrification Initiative, Honda will soon be expanding its lineup of electrified vehicles and increasing the usage of its two-motor hybrid powertrain. This will add to the family of electrified Honda models, which currently includes vehicles like the Honda Accord Hybrid; the CR-Z Hybrid; the Clarity Fuel Cell, which was launched in December 2016 and is currently only available in California; and the forthcoming Clarity Electric and Clarity Plug-In Hybrid models, which are set to launch during 2017.
Honda’s Electrified Future
Among future hybrid Honda models coming down the pipe, Honda has announced it will launch a new, dedicated hybrid vehicle in 2018 that will be made in America and launched throughout the United States.
Honda has further announced it will be increasing the use of its two-motor hybrid powertrain, expanding use of the hybrid powertrain from Honda passenger cars only to include Honda’s lineup of lights trucks, as well.
In all, according to information from Honda, about half of the all-new models Honda will be launching in the U.S. within the next two years will feature electric-drive technology of some kind.
Honda has set a goal that by the year 2030, two-thirds of the company’s sales will be generated by electrified automobiles. Another Honda goal is to reduce total CO2 emissions by half by the year 2050.
While Honda has not yet released information regarding which vehicle or vehicles on its light-truck roster will be given hybrid applications, experts speculate that the Honda CR-V would be a prime candidate, as a CR-V Hybrid model would be able to take on the competing Toyota RAV4 hybrid. The Honda Odyssey minivan would be another likely prospect for hybrid technology, as Chrysler has released a hybrid version of its Pacifica minivan. Honda already offers a hybrid version of the Odyssey in the Japanese automotive market.
